Motorola DROID, also known as the original DROID, is about to receive “small software update” in the following days. Initially, the update will be pushed only to a select number of DROID owners, members of Motorola's Feedback Network.

For those expecting an upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, chances are zero to none that this “small” update could be it.

However, it is a good thing to know that Motorola continues to work on software updates for some of the older Android smartphones.

There's a high chance that the next update will be 2.2.2, which might be the same update that the Nexus One received last week.

Users who already got an email from Motorola Feedback Network have already been selected to receive the update in the first wave. Here is how the email sounds:

“We’ve learned recently that the original Droid will soon get a small software update. A limited number of owners will receive the update as part of a pre-launch “soak” test before it’s more widely released. This has become standard practice, so we can observe for a few days to make sure there are no hidden problems before wide release.

There is a window of opportunity to be included in the pre-launch soak if you like. We would appreciate it if you would, and then provide us with some brief feedback on the update. Simply take this very short registration survey to sign up. Unfortunately, we have to provide a list very soon, so please take the survey right away if you are interested. There are a limited – but generous — number of slots available.

If the update passes the testing period without any problems, all Motorola DROID owners will probably receive the software update by mid-February.
