Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless seems set to offer a great deal of new features to its subscribers as the soon to be launched Motorola DROID becomes available. The latest reports around the Internet show that the operator will offer users the possibility to enjoy tethering along with the fresh mobile phone.

Those Motorola DROID owners who would like to use their device so as to connect a laptop to Verizon's 3G wireless EV-DO service will be able to do so, is what a representative with the carrier is reported to have confirmed. However, it should be noted that Motorola DROID won't have tethering available for it as soon as it reaches the market, but that the feature will come to users sometime next year.

Most of Verizon's smartphones already enjoy tethering, a feature that Verizon Wireless calls Mobile Broadband Connect. The carrier's subscribers have to pay extra for the service, namely $15 when it comes to corporate users who have data plans of $44.99 per month, or $30 for end users who have plans priced at $29.99 per month.

Motorola DROID's tethering capabilities will be greatly appreciated by its users, especially since the device is touted as a direct competitor against Apple's iPhone, which is available exclusively via AT&T in the US, and which does not have the feature at the moment. It should also be mentioned that Sprint, another leading carrier in the US, plans on removing tethering from its network next year, while T-Mobile, the fourth largest carrier in the US, does not support the service on its network.

For the time being, however, there are no exact details on when tethering comes to Motorola DROID, nor on how much Verizon plans to charge for the service, though there are great chances the current price will be applied to the DROID too. The mobile phone will become available for purchase tomorrow, exclusively from Big Red, which has already announced that it plans on opening its stores earlier to meet demand.
