The information has just been confirmed by Motorola’s David Schuster

We have been reporting on Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades for Motorola’s 2012 and 2013 DROID family since late last year, but only a few got the update until now.

Information on the promised updates was scarce up to the point that it was almost non-existent for a few months, so owners of Motorola’s DROID smartphones were probably confused on what was going to happen with their devices.

Well, it looks like there’s hope for them as Motorola Mobility's Senior Director of Software Product Management David Schuster has confirmed that at least two older DROIDs will receive the long-awaited Android 4.4.2 KitKat update soon.

“A number of people have been asking me about that status of the KitKat upgrade for the 2012 DROID family (HD and M). I am happy to report that we have made great progress and it should only be a few more weeks until you guys can enjoy it. So stay tuned.”

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR M should rest assured that it will take even more time for Verizon Wireless to bring the update to their devices. So, even if Motorola manages to deliver the KitKat upgrade this month, the Big Red might have to test it for a few more weeks.

This means that those who own one of the two smartphones mentioned will have to wait until at least the end of May for the KitKat update. Speaking of which, we are pretty sure that this will be Android 4.4.2 KitKat and not 4.4 or 4.4.3, as the information has been confirmed by Schuster.

He said that, “it will be 4.4.2 for the DROID 2012 family of products.... too far along dev/testing to switch now... will delay things too much.”

While it’s too early to talk about the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update that has just been rolled out to Nexus 5 devices at Sprint, we expect Motorola to be able to push it to both DROID RAZR HD and RAZR M soon after the main KitKat 4.4.2 update goes live.

Android 4.4.3 KitKat is mostly made of bug fixes, so it shouldn’t take Motorola’s engineers too much to bring it to all compatible DROID devices.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR M are not the only smartphones that should get the much-needed KitKat update, but Schuster only referred to these two, which apparently have the most vocal fans.

Here is hoping that the upgrade will be available sooner rather than later. We will keep an eye out for any additional details, so stay tuned for updates on the matter.
