A new DROID handset from Motorola is expected to become available for purchase in the United States on the airwaves of Verizon Wireless, namely the Motorola DROID 3.

Already spotted into the wild a few times before, the new mobile phone might hit the shelves at the wireless carrier as soon as July 7th, the latest reports on the matter suggest.

The yet unofficial smartphone is expected to hit the market with a dual-core application processor inside, a large touchscreen display, and the same sliding form factor as its predecessors, the Motorola DROID and DROID 2.

Although nothing was confirmed on the existence of this device in an official manner, the rumor has it that it should not be too long before things are formally unveiled.

Moreover, mobile game publisher Gameloft has just added 'Motorola XT862 Droid 3' to the list of supported devices, which suggests that the phone might indeed be announced in the not-too-distant future.

According to the guys over at Droid-life, sources familiar with Verizon's plans confirmed the fact that DROID 3 is set to be unveiled on July 7th.

Previous rumors did suggest that Verizon might unveil the new device sometime in late June or in early July, but no specific date has been mentioned until now.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the Motorola DROID 3 is expected to arrive on the market with a 4-inch touchscreeen display that can deliver a qHD resolution, and with a side-sliding 5-row QWERTY keyboard hidden beneath it.

Moreover, it should include a TI OMAP dual-core application processor, with each core clocked in at around 1GHz, most probably.

The specifications list of this device also includes an 8-megapixel camera on the back, with video recording, HDMI-out, the usual WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS capabilities, as well as the suite of sensors that Android smartphones usually feature.

Apparently, the Motorola DROID 3 would run under Google's Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread operating system, and should sport the new Blur interface from Motorola.
