Motorola and Telecom has just announced that the DEFY Android smartphone is now available for purchase in New Zealand via Telecom carrier.

While the device can be purchased for $799 off-contract, customers can lower its price by selecting a more expensive long-term contract.

Telecom's post paid monthly plans include calling minutes, texts and data for one simple monthly charge and offer users a choice of a no-term contract or a higher handset subsidy off their new mobile.

Basically, customers who sign a new two-year agreement and pick the 'Smartphone $140' plan will receive the DEFY for free.

The unusual rugged handset is dustproof and water-resistant certified and features a 3.7-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors support and 480 x 854 pixels resolution, which is toughened by Gorilla glass.

The phone features the MOTOBLUR UI which streams all contacts, posts, messages and photos from Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Gmail, work and personal e-mail, directly on the phone's homescreen with the option to filter out anything that is not needed.

Users can also automatically backup contacts, log-in information, home screen customizations, e-mail and social network messages to a secure server. It is also possible to wipe any personal data remotely, in case the phone is lost or stolen.

Although Motorola DEFY was delivered with Android 2.1 Eclair at launch, the manufacturer upgraded the phone's software to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Motorola fans living in New Zealand will be able to purchase the DEFY with Android 2.2 Froyo on board out-of-the-box.

Equipped with a 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor, the DEFY packs 2 GB storage, 512 MB RAM, and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 2GB card included).

Motorola DEFY provides users with a wide range of connectivity features such as: HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 2 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS with A-GPS support, DLNA function and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP support.
