Motorola announced today the inauguration of its new research and development (R&D) complex in Wangjing, Beijing, which coincides with the company's 20th anniversary in China.

The R&D complex has 92,000 square meters and its construction started back in March 2005 in collaboration with Zhongguancun Electronic Zone Construction Co., Ltd and the Chaoyang District Government of Beijing. It consists of three R&D buildings, one lab building and one 16-floor office tower and will host more than Motorola employees of which 2,000 are R&D engineers.

"China has always been a very important part of our company's strategy and it continues to be," said Greg Brown, president and chief operating officer, Motorola Inc. " Today's event is another key milestone for Motorola. The inauguration of Motorola China R&D Complex will make the company better positioned to drive development of China's wireless industry and to achieve win-win results with local customers, consumers and partners."

Besides introducing high-class telecommunications products and technologies in China, Motorola has built, during the years, a strong local R&D team that brought various innovations. Motorola's Mobile Device China Design Center developed a smartphone family (including A760, A1200 and A388C) that achieved impressive market performance; Motorola Global Software Group China Center acquired China's first SEI CMM/CMMI Level 5 certificate, the highest recognition for software development organizations; Motorola Home & Networks Mobility China GSM/UMTS R&D Team achieved impressive R&D results by evolving GSM, via GPRS and EDGE, to UMTS.

The three above mentioned R&D institutes will move in the new Wangjing complex, along with other important labs and R&D centers: Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) China Design Center, Motorola Beijing Compliance Lab, Customer Network Resolution Center (CNRC), Motorola Engineering Institute (MEI) and Antenna and EMI labs.

Motorola invested until now $800 million in research and development in China, building centers and labs in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chengdu, Nanjing and Hangzhou, totalizing more than 3,000 R&D employees. Motorola China Research and Development Institute (MCRDI) focuses on environment-conscious mobile devices, software and materials and is currently a major research and development Motorola hub, the largest of its kind in China.
