Mobile phone maker Motorola has unveiled officially last month during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a new Android-based handset, the Motorola QUENCH / CLIQ XT, set to land on shelves pretty soon, and now a series of hands-on photos with it emerged. The handset will arrive in the US at T-Mobile under the name of CLIQ XT, and it seems that Motorola already confirmed that it would be put on sale before the end of this month.

The hands-on photos with the device emerged on Engadget, which received a unit for review, and which says that the launch of the phone has been confirmed for March. According to them, the Motorola CLIQ XT is a little thinner than the DROID, feels lighter than expected, and sports a rather appealing purple rubbery back.

Overall, it seems that the new mobile phone was capable to impress more than other Android-based handsets from Motorola, such as the Backflip or Devour. The CLIQ XT delivers pretty good performance levels, even if they are not very impressive. However, the MotoBlur solution works nicely on the phone, and the browser is also said to be running pretty smooth, even if more than one navigation window was opened.

Among the other observations Engadget makes on CLIQ XT, we can count: - The clickable touchpad is just fine for maneuvering through smaller menus, but we've been all touchscreen, all the time. - Speaking of the multitouch feature is everything we dreamed of, pinching to zoom is very responsive in both the newly improved Photo Gallery and in the browser. - As for Flash Lite, we we're able to watch a YouTube video in the browser when we switched over to the "desktop" version in order to avoid launching the YouTube app. Video was laggy over 3G, but that's to be expected here in New York. - We'd be remiss not to mention the 5 megapixel cam -- we've taken some nice shots so far with it, though it does seem to be a bit slow to launch
