Motorola Alexander, a sliding mobile phone that surfaced for the into the wild first time about a year ago, and which was reported at the beginning of 2009 to never come to the market, has resurfaced to the web under a new name, Motorola Somerset, while packing the same QWERTY keypad as initially reported.

The Motorola Somerset, which seems to be none other than the Alexander, was spotted at the Bluetooth SIG, where it was described as follows: "Mobile Phone with Bluetooth technology. The phone supports Remote Control Profile, Dial Up Networking Profile, Basic Printing Profile, Object Push Profile, Audio Video Distribution Transport Protocol, Basic Imaging Profile, Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, Interoperability Test Specification, Hands-Free Profile 1.5. Phone has QWERTY keyboard. Supports 3.5mm Stereo Jack. MMC and Camera is supported.”

According to the news, the handset is expected to sport the 8-megapixel photo snapper that was stated to come with the Alexander as well, meaning that there won't be many differences between the two. At the same time, we also learn that it is a GSM handset, but no further details on it are available, so it remains to be seen if the handsets managed to survive and will make its appearance onto the market in the end.

In related news, we learn that AT&T also had plans to release a similar handset, resembling both the Alexander and the newly spotted Somerset, though coming with some different specs, at least as regards the camera, which is only 2 megapixels, and the name, which seems to be Motorola Sawgrass. The info comes from a leaked slide with AT&T's roadmap and emerged on Engadget, along with many other pieces on the company's plans for the future. According to this document, the handset should have been unveiled until now, so it’s one of the two: either it has been delayed, or it will never come to the market.
