Owners of a Motorola ATRIX smartphone on the airwaves of wireless carrier Telstra in Australia will soon be able to upgrade their devices to a new version of Google's Android operating system.

The wireless services provider is currently gearing up for the release of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the handset, and aims at pushing it out of its labs as soon as next month.

At the moment, the wireless operator is testing the software update against its network, so as to make sure that no issues emerge as soon as they start to upgrade devices.

On its website, Telstra notes that Australian ATRIX users on its airwaves should start receiving the Gingerbread update in September, but that this is only a targeted time frame.

The specific release date for the update has not been unveiled until now, and it might take a while before the carrier makes it official.

Hopefully, Gingerbread will land on Motorola ATRIX devices at Telstra in early September, and not towards the end of the month.

The Android 2.3 software update was already released on ATRIX in some markets around the world, but Australia seems to have been left behind a little, the same as Europe, where it should land starting with the fourth quarter of the year.

For example, the update arrived on the US markets sometime in June, while Canadian ATRIX users received it last week.

What remains to be seen is whether the software update will bring unlocked bootloaders on ATRIX devices in Australia or not.

As the guys over at Ausdroid note, Motorola did promise to unlock the bootloaders on its handsets, ATRIX included, but they did not offer a specific time frame for when that might happen.

The company's first dual-core Android smartphone was expected to receive it along with Gingerbread, but Motorola removed the code from this update in the US and Canada, it seems.

Hopefully, more info on the matter will emerge as the release date for the new software approaches, so stay tuned for additional details on this.
