Motorola ATRIX, the high-end device that Motorola Mobility unveiled to the world in January during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, has just got its bootloader unlocked in an unofficial manner.

The mobile phone was expected to receive a software update in the not too far future that will unlock its bootloader, but it seems that enthusiasts already made the move.

An unlocked bootloader will offer users the possibility to easily install on their devices any compatible custom ROM available out there.

Up until now, Motorola was against having unlockable / relockable bootloaders on its devices, but the company changed its mind several weeks ago, and announced that it would soon bring to the market handsets that will be more opened than before.

Moreover, the company also promised software update for existing mobile phones, so as to unlock their bootloaders too, offering users more freedom when it comes to the software loaded on these devices.

Rumor has it that Motorola was set to deliver this update to its ATRIX users as part of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade that should arrive on the handset in early July.

However, the modding community already managed to unlock the bootloader on this device, and those who would like to take the risk and apply the tweak on their phones can already do so.

Of course, this is not a recommended action, especially now, when the official solution is so near. Those who would like to give it a try will do so at their own risk.

Before proceeding, they should know that the process will delete the data on the device, which means that they should perform a backup before making the move.

All of the necessary info on the unlocking the bootloader on Motorola ATRIX can be found on this tread on XDA-Developers. You should also have a look at the video embedded below (courtesy of Briefmobile) to learn some more info on the matter.
