Not the previously spotted Motorola Shadow

A new mobile phone from Motorola has just received Wi-Fi certification, and it seems that it might be none other than the long rumored Motorola DROID 2. The certification was awarded to a handset that sports the model number A955, which suggests that this is the same phone previously expected to be released on the market as the Motorola DROID 2 (rumored to be none other than the Motorola Shadow).

A recent tweet from a person who “monitors Android device signatures,” as BGR notes, states that the A955 is indeed the Motorola DROID 2 that many are waiting for to make an appearance on Big Red's shelves, and which has been already spotted with support for Verizon’s EV-DO network. Moreover, considering that Motorola DROID sported model number A855, it makes sense that its successor would be included in the same Axxx line.

However, the Motorola DROID 2 is also said to be a different device from the Motorola Shadow that made it into the wild a few times before. The latter sports model number MB810, and the same twitterer who unveiled that A955 was the DROID 2 said in a new tweet that MB810 was the Shadow. In other worlds, two handsets are expected to soon arrive on the market from Motorola, and there are great chances that both will run under Google's Android operating system.

Those interested in learning a few more details on the handset that was certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance with support for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n should take a look at the documentation available here (PDF link). Unfortunately, the certification does not offer specific details on whether the device in question is indeed the successor of DROID, nor on whether it arrives at Verizon anytime soon. One way or the other, more info on this might emerge soon, so keep an eye on this space to learn the news.
