Yesterday, Google and Motorola officially announced the Moto X smartphone, a mid-range handset that promises high-end features and capabilities, along with a variety of customization options.

When released in late August, Moto X won’t land on shelves as a cutting-edge device, but will still be able to appeal to a lot to users design-wise, while offering a near-stock Android experience, with a series of unique features added on top.

Moto X was made official with a 4.7-inch touchscreen display (with Corning Gorilla Glass protection) capable of delivering a 720p resolution and 316PPI pixel density, as well as with a 1.7 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU inside, paired with 2GB of RAM.

In fact, the handset sports Motorola’s new X8 computing system that was included in the recently unveiled new DROID phones, and which features said dual-core chip, an Adreno 320 quad-core GPU, a dedicated natural language processing core, and a context computing processor.

On the back, Moto X sports a 10-megapixel ClearPixel photo snapper with LED Flash and 1080p video recording capabilities, paired with a 2MP front camera to enable video calling on the go.

The handset’s main camera is said to be based on RGBC technology, which allows it to capture up to 75% more light than other sensors. Furthermore, the sensor relies on 1.4-micron pixels, more than what 13MP camera smartphones can offer at 1.12-micron pixels.

The specs list of the mobile phone also includes Wi-Fi 802.11a/g/b/n/ac (dual band capable), Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, Micracast wireless streaming, NFC, GPS, and support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS/HSPA + up to 42 Mbps, CDMA/EVDO Rev. A (CDMA model only), and 4G – LTE networks.

Moto X measures 129.3 x 65 x 10.4 mm, but it sports a curved back, which results in it being only 5.4mm thick at its thinnest point. It weighs 130 grams and packs a 2200 mAh battery capable of offering up to 24 hours of mixed usage.

However, the main selling point of the device is represented by the many customization options that users can choose from, including various back plate color options, as can be seen in the gallery below.

The phone arrives in 16GB and 32GB flavors, while providing buyers with the possibility to choose between 2 front colors, 18 back colors, and 7 accents, in addition to wallpapers, custom messages, and more. Overall, there are over 2,000 possibilities to choose from, Motorola notes.

Color options like Woven Black and Woven White will be offered via carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. The handset arrives with a locked bootloader, but Motorola says that developer editions will be released with support for all networks.
