Before dyeing your hair at home, you must make sure you perform the recommended allergy test. However, not even this test guarantees that you won’t end up like Lyn Gregory from Poole, Dorset, who recently had the worst experience ever after a home dye job.

Ms. Gregory, 56, tells the Daily Mail that she’s been using the same hair dye for years but, even so, she religiously performs the allergy test before a new application, well aware that reactions can always appear, even if you don’t change the brand.

She has white hair but she doesn’t dye it all, she just does the lower half in black, for contrast. She went and bought a Schwarzkopf Live Color kit and set to refreshing her dye.

On Friday, she performed the allergy test on a patch of skin on her arm, as recommended on the box. Within 48 hours, she’d seen nothing out of the ordinary so, on Sunday, she applied the dye on her scalp.

By mid-week, she was literally in hell, with her scalp and skin on the neck covered in painful pustules that hurt so badly she wasn’t even able to sleep.

She went to the doctor’s and he gave her antibiotics and cream, but they only seemed to make the irritation worse. Ms. Gregory says she cut her hair to prevent it from touching the skin and making it even worse, but that was no good either.

Eventually, her GP put her on steroids and she needed 8 whole weeks for her skin to recover. She is now suing Schwarzkopf for what happened because, as far as she was concerned, she did what was required of her and she still got the allergy.

She provided the British tab with photos of the rash she got from the dye and, let us warn you, it’s not a pretty sight. They are available at the link above.

Contacted for comment, a rep for the company only said that, ‘”We are sorry to hear about Ms. Gregory’s reaction and hope that she has now fully recovered. We were advised of Ms. Gregory’s reaction by her solicitor. As such we are not able to comment in such circumstances.”
