It may very well be that elephants are very much helpless when it comes to defending themselves against poachers, yet it is also true that these animals are just not the gentle giants most people believe them to be.

The mother elephant pictured above thoroughly proved this when charging a pack of hyenas and eventually chasing them away in order to protect her injured calf.

Sources inform us that the confrontation took place in the Chobe National Park in Botswana, and was caught on camera by photographer Jayesh Mehta.

The mother elephant and her calf were not alone in this battle. Thus, other members of the herd helped chase the hyenas away.

“The noise of the animals, the rough ride through the bush, the dust - some purposely raised by the elephants to obscure their location - and the sheer thrill of this life-and-death encounter was unbelievable,” Jayesh Mehta later said.
