14 DAY TRIAL // Gwyneth Paltrow delivered the bomb of the week with her “conscious uncoupling” announcement last week, but it wasn’t just her fans who were blindsided about her decision to split from Chris Martin. Her mother Blythe Danner hoped until the last moment she would make the marriage work.
In the separation announcement, Gwyneth doesn’t cite a reason for the split, though she leaves no doubt that there’s no chance for her and Chris to mend broken bridges. They have two children together and their main focus right now is to be good parents no matter their problems.
According to insiders speaking to Us Weekly, Blythe hoped they would work out said problems – nay, she even begged Gwyneth to try and make the relationship work at all costs. After all, she was married to her husband, Gwyneth’s father, for 33 years, so she believed in the whole “till death do us part” bit of the vows.
“[She's] really upset. She loves Chris. She begged Gwyneth not to end it, that he's a good man. But Gwyneth had to do what she felt was best,” says a spy.
When she decided to pull the plug on the marriage, the Oscar-winning actress had already tried everything to save her marriage, she had exhausted every possibility.
“They really tried to make it work. You could tell something was wrong, though, over the last few months. You could see a sadness in each of their eyes,” says another spy.
Depending on which tabloid report you believe, the marriage ended either because of cheating or because Chris had grown tired of always living by Gwyneth’s strict rules about everything from living arrangements to the food on the table and the family vacations.
There is some indication that the damning Vanity Fair that was supposed to run some months ago but never saw the light of day after all would have exposed Gwyneth as a serial cheater. However, there are also some accounts saying Chris too was being unfaithful.
We’ll probably never know the exact causes of the split but, for the time being, fans should be happy to know that the two are conducting themselves in a very mature manner.
They were even photographed out to dinner last night, sitting side by side at the table and apparently having a good time so, at least in this regard, it doesn’t look like this is a “typical” Hollywood breakup.
