Hacker Gary McKinnon, 39, wanted in the U.S for the most succesful hacking attacks on U.S. military computer networks, arrested on Tuesday night in north London, was freed on bail yesterday after an appearance in court.
Gary was arrested for causing $ 700,000 damages by illegally accessing 97 U.S government computers between February,
2001 and March, 2002, but the court established no classified material was obtained.
U.S officials seek his extradition, although there have been rare cases of foreign governments handing over computer-crime suspects.
His lawyers stated they will fight extradition, as their first concern is to have their fellow British national trialed by a British jury, as the American Judicial system inspires less confidence.
Mc Kinnon said he only wanted to prove the existence of UFOs and also expose the weakened security systems of the most important departments.
U.S authorities suspect Gary McKinnon, an unemployed computer systems administrator, to have been acting alone in major cyber crimes since 2002, using the screen name of Solo and penetrating over 90 government computers, including those at NASA, the Pentagon and more than a dozen military installations.
The 39 year old hacker might face $1.75 million in fines and almost 70 years in jail if he would ever be convicted of the crimes U.S had accused him of.
