A study released on Tuesday by Cyber-Ark shows that 80% of C-level executives and IT security professionals from North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region believe that cyber-attacks are more dangerous to a nation than physical attacks.

According to the report, 61% of the respondents agree that government and legislative action represents the solution to protecting critical infrastructure against advanced cyber threats.

57% of those who took part in the study say that the organizations they work for put too much faith in perimeter security. Moreover, 51% of them believe a cyber-attacker is currently in their corporate network, or has been in the past.

As far as the cloud is concerned, over half of IT security experts and C-level executives say they don’t know what their cloud service provider is doing to protect privileged accounts.

Despite the fact that they feel they can protect their private information better than their cloud provider, 25% of respondents still trust the third-party to handle their data.

Many organizations have come to realize that privileged accounts should be managed as an advanced threat vulnerability. 64% of those questioned say they’re managing privileged accounts accordingly.

“People around the world are acutely aware of the global threat cyber-attacks represent. Cyber-attackers have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to disrupt national financial systems, cause harm to critical infrastructure and severely damage businesses and economies,” commented John Worrall, CMO of Cyber-Ark.

“To achieve their goals, outside attackers must steal the privileged credentials of an authorized user to gain the access necessary to meet their objectives. This level of threat requires a proactive approach to security that protects and monitors the access points to the critical data and assets that attackers are targeting.”
