The upcoming Mortal Kombat X is apparently going to introduce a lot more new characters than we’ve been used to in the last installments in the fighting game series, and the signs point to over 7 or even 10 warriors joining the cast.

A fighting game is only as good as its roster of available brawlers is, and Mortal Kombat is no different. Since it was announced at the beginning of the month, players have been swarming Ed Boon, the series’ creator, with questions about which ones of the old characters will make a comeback and other such pretty important things.

During the E3 gaming trade show, Mortal Kombat X creative director Ed Boon revealed a solid chunk of gameplay from the upcoming title, showing off some of the truly brutal action that the franchise’s fans love and, most importantly, making the daring reveal of four new fighters.

It appears that developer NetherRealm really decided to up the ante with the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, as Boon mentioned during an interview with Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb that those who loved the new characters were going to have a blast when the game should come out.

He explained that NetherRealm was very aggressive with the cast of the upcoming fighting game, revealing that Mortal Kombat X would introduce more new characters than any other game in the series, even the first Mortal Kombat did.

The game that started it all featured seven playable characters, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. It also had two non-playable antagonists, Goro and Shang Tsung, and also featured a secret challenge in the form of Reptile, the green ninja who kept pestering you about perfection being the key and other such cryptic hints that alluded to how you get to fight him.

The warriors shown until now are Cassie Cage, daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Ferra/Torr, a vicious young girl that rides on the shoulders of a colossal brute, D’Vorah, a fighter with insect-like features, and Kotal Kahn, a mysterious and fearsome Aztec brawler.

That means that there are at least as many new characters to unveil from now on, and considering that Boon also said that there were some features which the studio still wanted to keep secret, it’s safe to say that we’re in for quite a big surprise with Mortal Kombat X.

Mortal Kombat X is currently scheduled for release sometime in 2015, for the PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms.
