Mortal Kombat X was officially announced yesterday by the series' creator Ed Boon, after a ton of fuss and cryptic messages worthy of a conspiracy theory.

Once the Twitter countdown was over, Ed Boon tweeted the MKX announcement video, portraying a showdown between the series' most iconic ninjas, Sub-Zero and Scorpion, whose rivalry has spawned many contentions in real life as well, with fans polarized into two camps, each one rooting for one of the fearsome assassins.

The video features an original track written by rapper Wiz Khalifa, called "Can't Be Stopped," which is an odd choice considering that the techno track that was part of the original soundtrack of the 1994 home version of Mortal Kombat is still heard at parties around the world. Well, at least a few parties.

Be that as it may, the prospect of playing a fresh Mortal Kombat game is still exciting, and publisher Warner Bros. decided to reveal some new pieces of information regarding NetherRealm's upcoming creation.

"Mortal Kombat has always been about over-the-top, visceral fighting and with Mortal Kombat X we wanted to utilize the power of new-gen consoles to give players our most intense game yet. The team has worked hard to make sure Mortal Kombat X delivers everything fans expect along with new characters, new game modes and an all-new graphics engine," said Ed Boon, creative director at NetherRealm.

The upcoming title will deliver a more cinematic experience, and the action was taunted as "the most brutal Kombat experience ever." In addition to this, the game will also have a significant online component, with Warner Bros. stating that it will deliver a fully connected experience that will launch players into a consistent online contest, where every fighter will count toward the global battle for supremacy.

Also, for the first time in the series' history, players will be able to choose from multiple versions of the same character, which can impact their strategy and even completely alter their fighting style, according to the studio.

The upcoming fighting game will also feature an original story that will showcase characters such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero and the others, while also introducing new challengers in the classic battle between the forces of good and evil.

Warner Bros. tweeted that Mortal Kombat X would be unveiled at E3 2014, taking place next week in Los Angeles, California.

The game is planned to be released on the Windows PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms, most likely sometime during 2015.
