Mortal Kombat X developer NetherRealm clarifies earlier rumors about the game not needing PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscriptions for its multiplayer, saying only that it won't require such membership to unlock any content in the game. For online play, they are still required.

Mortal Kombat has had a long and impressive history so far, delighting tens of millions of fighting game fans from all over the world across platforms that ranged from arcade cabinets to home consoles and PCs.

Now, developer NetherRealm is working on putting the finishing touches on Mortal Kombat X, the next title in the series, which should delight fans with classic characters but also fresh faces and mechanics.

Mortal Kombat X still requires premium subscriptions on consoles

Earlier today, Mortal Kombat X Executive Producer Sean Himmerick took to Twitter to talk about some of the features inside the game, and apparently confirmed that the title wouldn't require premium subscriptions to access its multiplayer on consoles.

However, Himmerick quickly realized that he misspoke, as he just tried to reply to a question regarding game content that needed special subscriptions.

Now, he clarifies on Twitter that he just wanted to state that Mortal Kombat X doesn't lock away any content behind the PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold memberships. However, the console rules enforced by Microsoft or Sony still apply.

As such, if you want to play Mortal Kombat X online on the PS3 or PS4, you still need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription or a Xbox Live Gold membership if you want to use the multiplayer on Xbox 360 or Xbox One.

A new live stream focusing on brutalities is coming

What's more, Himmerick also confirms that, on February 26, at 3pm CST, there's going to be a new live stream focused on brutalities and other gory moves from Mortal Kombat X that fans won't want to miss.

Expect to hear more about the game as we get closer to its launch in April for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
