The teasers regarding a new Mortal Kombat video game started on NetherRealm Studios' Ed Boon's Twitter a month ago, and now the wait is over.

The teasers followed some rumors regarding a possible sequel to 2011's Mortal Kombat, spawned by a slip-up of renowned actor Kiefer Sutherland, who mentioned having done work on a Mortal Kombat video game in an interview talking about his involvement with Metal Gear Solid.

But it seems that the rumor was in fact legitimate and Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon decided to take it upon himself to get the fighting game world hyped up. It all began with some cryptic messages that were soon revealed to be a countdown to precisely today, and the latest even announced the time of day the reveal would take place.

In addition to the tweets, a mysterious image has also been posted on Reddit, an image that also showed up on Ed Boon's Twitter account background, showing a shattered spine, just like in the animations that would detail internal damage in the latest installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise.

Earlier today, numerous page listings appeared on the Amazon UK website, telling of a Mortal Kombat X game heading for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC platforms sometime in 2015.

Now the cat is out of the bag, as the Mortal Kombat X announcement is official, straight from Ed Boon's Twitter account.

The ultra violence in the fighting game series saw a refreshing incarnation after Warner Bros. bought the franchise in 2009, with the 2011 game being both a critical as well as a financial success. It sought to reconnect the franchise to the original three titles and had solid fighting mechanics, managing to sell over 2 million units.

NetherRealm Studios' other successful fighting game, Injustice: Gods Among Us, pits various superheroes from the DC Comics universe against each other in a similar, narrative-driven manner, before the actual trading of blows begins.

Both games are still part of big tournaments all over the world, and NetherRealm seems to be stepping up its game with every chance.

Now it appears they're getting ready for the next iteration in the popular fighting game franchise, titled Mortal Kombat X. The company has just released the announcement trailer, showing a brutal encounter between the series' iconic Sub-Zero and Scorpion, the ninja Arch-rivals, all to the tune of Wiz Khalifa's Can't be Stopped.

The trailer aims to offer a taste of what's to come, a cinematic presentation that blends with dynamic gameplay moments in order to present "an unprecedented Kombat experience."
