Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has talked a bit about the core goals with the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, and emphasized the desire of his team at NetherRealm to deliver new things such as characters, features, or gameplay mechanics.

Mortal Kombat X was announced before E3 2014 last month, and since then it has received quite a lot of details about what the development team at NetherRealm wants to do with the latest iteration of the classic fighting game experience.

Now, franchise co-creator and NetherRealm boss Ed Boon has talked a bit more about the new title and how the team was really excited to return to the classic series after the latest title, Injustice: Gods Among Us,

"We did a game called Injustice and that did really well so we were happy about that, but now that we have the next generation of consoles and we're kind of jumping back in with new enthusiasm for Mortal Kombat," Boon tells GRTV.

With the new Mortal Kombat, Boon and his team want to introduce lots of new elements to the old franchise, from fresh features to all-new characters and other such things.

"The main thing that we want to do is introduce new things, new features, new gameplay elements to the mix," he adds. "This Mortal Kombat we're introducing more new characters than we have before. And introducing more features like the character variations - every character in the game has three versions that have different moves and different kind of strategies involved with them."

"So the process of selecting a character and going up against another character is completely different in this game, because of the three versions of every character."

One such character variation includes a Cryomancer version of noted fan favorite Sub-Zero. While all his versions have access to most of the basic abilities, only the Cryomancer can summon ice weapons that can be used in combat.

These variations will offer offensive and defensive variations on all characters, so that players don't have to play with a fighter they're not comfortable with.

Boon has also mentioned that while many new features will be added, some successful elements from Mortal Komabt 9, like the Challenge Tower, could make a comeback in some way.

"We're leaning towards trying new things. I think the Challenge Tower and all that was great in Mortal Kombat 9, and so there are certain things that we really like that worked out well. But we don't just want to bring everything and just reskin the game, you know, with next-gen graphics. We really want to introduce new features as well."

Mortal Kombat X is set to debut next year for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms.
