Teasers about a new Mortal Kombat video game seem to be growing ever more present and now a poster, which seems to be created by the company in charge of the franchise, shows the official logo alongside the text “Who’s Next?”.

The image was posted on Reddit and there was no official reaction to it coming from NetherRealm Studios or from publisher Warner Bros. Interactive.

The image on its own, despite its clear connection to Mortal Kombat as a franchise, might not be enough to suggest that a new title in the fighting game series is in development, but Ed Boon, the creator of the core concept, has been making mysterious tweets about it for the past few weeks.

Recently, he has also changed his Twitter account background with the same logo and text combination.

An official reveal is set to be made at some point right before the E3 2014 event, which takes place starting on June 10, and an early playable version of the title might be offered to a limited number of fans.

The most recent video game from NetherRealm Studio is Injustice: Gods Among Us, which was launched in April of last year on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo-made Wii U.

The title used core fighting game concepts, but instead of the Mortal Kombat roster, it had superheroes taken from the DC Comics universe, which was owned by Warner Bros.

The game was well received by both fans of the genre and by those who loved the characters and plenty of gamers praised the story and lore that the studio included.

The most recent link to the Mortal Kombat series was the reboot of the series that was delivered in 2011, with NetherRealm seeking to re-create the narrative connected to the first three titles in the franchise.

The game managed to sell more than 2 million units and was considered a success, picking up a number of awards and getting praise for the purity of its fighting mechanics.

The studio has not offered any hints so far about the gameplay of the new title it is teasing but, given the core elements of the series, it is likely that combat will once more take place on a 2D plane, with the characters and the environments rendered in full 3D.

NetherRealm will also have to create a story that can capture the attention of Mortal Kombat fans.
