Both Tekken and Street Fighter might make good partners

Speaking to G4 when asked about a possible Mortal Kombat crossover, Ed Boon, who is the creator of the fighting game series and the leader at Netherrealm Studios, has said, “We absolutely have thought about it.”

It seems that the main problem for any possible collaboration is that Mortal Kombat sees over the top violence as being important to the core of the franchise, while other studios that create similar titles are mostly interested in getting a T rating by making all the violence pretty cartoonish.

Boon added, “But we’ve all dreamt with crossing over with Street Fighter or Tekken. Killer Instinct was also one that was coming up since they were an M-rated game as well. But I’ll tell you that we’ve had many, many conversations along those lines.”

The fact that any character who appears in Mortal Kombat needs to be able to deliver and receive fatalities might also be a problem.

Ed Boon recounted how the issue was close to eliminating Kratos as a bonus character in the PlayStation 3 version of the Mortal Kombat reboot.

He said that the Santa Monica developers who were in charge of the franchise were initially worried about how fatalities would work on the God of War main character and how the fans would feel about them.

They only opened up to the idea when they saw what Kratos himself could do to the other characters in the world.

Boon believes that both the worlds of Tekken and Street Fighter could make for fun crossover titles.

At the moment both Capcom and Namco Bandai are working on crossover games using their properties, with the development teams trying to show how the two different universes can work under an unified series of gameplay rules.

Street Fighter X Tekken will be launched on March 6 of next year.
