The Mortal Kombat franchise has staged a comeback in the visual space with the launch of the new Legacy live action series that received its first episode, and with the upcoming launch of the rebooted video game series, the series seems to be on the verge of a major comeback.

Ed Boon, who is the creator of the Mortal Kombat series, has talked to Joystiq about the new live action series that will exist alongside the new game and said, “I’d love it if this was the first of a number of things that we can do with Kevin and Warner Brothers in terms of bringing Mortal Kombat to other media.”

He added, “Whether it’s live-action shorts like this, another feature film would be great, and of course future video games as well. I was sent the link like everybody else was, and had the same kind of reaction: blown away and wondering who made this.”

The director of Legacy, Kevin Tancharoen, who also created the Rebirth fake trailer that led to the web based series, seems to be interested in grounding the characters in reality, giving them backgrounds that will shape their future destinies.

The first video installment does not show any over-the-top fighting and instead focuses on Kano, Jax and Sonia Blade as being on opposite sides of the law, with just a few suggestions about their future tournament fighter identities.

The rebooted Mortal Kombat will focus on the classic gameplay of the series, with mechanics that are quick to pick up by any player but require time to be mastered.

Long-term fans will be pleased to know that gore-filled Fatalities are included.

The new Mortal Kombat video game is set to be launched on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
