Microsoft is spending a fortune to make Windows 8.1 a successful product, but Windows 7 continues to hold the leading spot in user popularity surveys across the world.

Statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter for the month of October show that Windows 7 not only is the number one operating system on the market, but it’s also being used by more than 50 percent of consumers worldwide.

Windows 7 has a market share of 51.73 percent, StatCounter claims, while Windows XP comes next with 20.05 percent. As far as Windows 8 is concerned, things are far from encouraging, with Microsoft’s modern platform powering only 7.7 percent of PCs right now.

Mac OS X comes next with 7.01 percent, while Windows Vista lost more points before eventually settling to a 5.31 percent market share.
