With approximately six months left until Microsoft officially pulls the plug on Windows XP, more users have decided to abandon the aging platform and move to Windows 7 or 8, an independent software testing firm explained.

Angela Nash, GM Auckland, Qual IT, told TechDay that her company sees a surge in the number of users who decided to start the transition from XP to a newer operating system, with Windows 7 and Windows 8 currently the top two destinations.

“With a little over six more months to go before the end date, the company is seeing a surge in businesses approaching them to transition all PCs and applications to Windows7 or 8,” Nash explained.

“Since an operating system upgrade affects every single user in a business, any change has the capacity to inflict severe delay, cost, or in the case of finance or compliance applications, introduce a very high level of risk for a business.”

Windows XP will be officially discontinued on April 8, 2014 and Microsoft hopes to see only 13 percent of the users sticking to this particular OS. At this point, XP is still powering 33 percent of computers worldwide.
