The Windows Start menu has become some sort of obsession for Microsoft after the company was heavily criticized for removing it in Windows 8, so everyone at Redmond is now trying to make sure that they get it right in Windows 10 to win back users’ hearts.

A screenshot that reached the web recently via Chinese media shows that Microsoft is planning to introduce even more customization options for the Start menu in the coming builds, even though the company has never talked about these publicly.

This is part of Redmond’s plan to give people more choices and it’s very obvious that the Start menu is playing a key role in this new approach.

New colors and transparency settings

The Start menu will make its comeback in Windows 10, and build 10056 comes with a resizable version that allows users to adjust its dimensions in a way that would better fit their screens.

This option was previously offered in the first versions of the technical preview, but was removed afterwards as Microsoft advanced with work on Windows 10. Following popular demand, however, the company decided to bring it back, so it’s now available again and very likely to remain so until the OS reaches the RTM development phase.

This screenshot also shows that the Start menu will have its very own section in the PC settings screen, so you’ll be able to let the OS automatically pick a color from the background to make the desktop look better with the same colors. You can also choose to show color on taskbar and Start menu and, last but not least, to make the Start menu transparent.

In the meantime, we do know that Microsoft is also working on new animations for the Start menu, and some of them are already available in build 10056. Of course, many of these could change until Windows 10 reaches RTM, which according to sources should happen in June.
