Yesterday, Summit Entertainment upped the promo campaign on the upcoming vampire film “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” with a bunch of character posters of the Volturi, the dreaded, “royal” vampires who maintain peace and make sure their secret is well guarded. Now, once with the print issue of People magazine, the studio has also released the first shots of them in the film, as Twilight Source can confirm.

Any “Twilight” fan who has also read Stephenie Meyer’s books knows that the Volturi are truly not to be messed with, since they are both very strong and unmerciful when it comes to getting their way done. Fans must also know that, in “New Moon,” Edward Cullen seeks their help when he thinks Bella killed herself. In her turn, warned by Alice, Bella flies to Italy to save him and, thus, we get to meet the Volturi.

All these vampires make the biggest covenant ever, one that rules over all the vampires and intervenes every time the secret of their existence is about to be revealed to the humans. They are terrifying and have none of the redeeming qualities of the Cullens, because they only care about their own well-being, therefore would never think twice about hurting a mortal if that served their best interest. The photos just released by Summit, and also included within the pages of the latest People magazine print edition, show that Chris Weitz has managed to render these exact qualities on film.

Speaking of Weitz, the famed director tells People he wanted to make sure the Volturi’s eyes were their most menacing feature. Fans know that the vampires in “Twilight” have blood-red eyes, except for the Cullens, who, because of their “vegetarian” diet (which means they hunt for animals to not feed on humans), have golden eyes. Since the Volturi are so dangerous and feared, it’s only natural their eyes be the most terrifying.

“They’re all hand-painted, specially manufactured contacts.” Weitz tells People of the contacts the cast had to wear to shoot the scenes. “They’re opaque red, almost like preying mantis eyes. You can’t really see into them. There’s something terribly off-putting about it.” the director further explains.
