Today, Nokia announced officially the launch of its first Symbian^3-based mobile phone, the Nokia N8. The handset is set to become the company's next flagship device, as it sports a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen display with support for multi-touch gestures, boasting a 640 x 320 pixels resolution, along with a 12-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, and video recording capabilities at 720p.

The specifications list of the new phone includes 135MB of internal memory, coupled with 16GB mass memory and a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of removable storage space, 256MB of RAM and 512MB of ROM, and support for WCDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz and GSM/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz band frequencies.

The Nokia N8 measures 113.5 x 59.12 x 12.9 mm, weighs in at 135g, and packs a BL-4D 1200mAh Li-Ion battery inside, which is said to be non-removable by user. On the connectivity side, we can count microUSB (USB 2.0), Wi-Fi (IEEE802.11 b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI out, built-in A-GPS with location support for GPS, A-GPS, WLAN and Cell-ID, as well as FM Radio with RDS, and the 3.5 mm Nokia AV connector for audio in/out and TV-out.

The new Symbian^3 operating system will bring a series of features of its own into the equation, such as a multi-page homescreen with the possibility to customize widgets, visual task switcher, or a single tap 'Direct UI' paradigm. Additional features include Flash Lite 4, with compatibility of Flash 10; Ovi Maps, Nokia Messaging, Ovi Music and Ovi Store; new menu structure with fewer prompts; or a renewed music experience with cover flow albums.

Originally expected to hit the market in Q2, the Nokia N8 should become available for purchase in the third quarter of the ongoing year, featuring a suggested retail price of €370 before taxes and subsidies. According to Nokia, the new device will arrive on shelves in five color options, including Dark Grey, Silver White, Green, Blue and Orange.
