More Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Tips and TricksIt gets better and better |
|
| |
Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the latest touchscreen handset from Nokia, is 'trickier' than I thought. After writing the previous article about tips and tricks that I found while using it, I discovered other amazing features that make the device even more user-friendly than I had previously believed. In the following, I'll be presenting more Nokia 5800 XpressMusic tips and tricks that will help you customize the handset to the max.
There's the possibility of customizing the Shortcuts bar on the Home screen, if you choose to use it. The only drawback is that it can only contain 4 application shortcuts. If you don't have your Shortcuts bar displayed on the screen then go to Main menu/Settings/Personal/Home Screen/Home Screen Menu Theme and select the Shortcuts bar. You can alter the default setting by going to Main menu/Settings/Personal/Home screen/Shortcuts. Furthermore, for those who are installing and using a large number of third-party applications and don't have enough space on the Shortcuts bar to add their shortcuts for quick access, there's the possibility of rearranging all the icons that can be found in any folder in the Main menu. By going to Main menu/Applications/Options/Organise and moving various applications using the drag and drop feature, you can change their places among each other. Another interesting shortcut is the Green key (Accept calls), which can be used to send a message without the need of pressing any other key on the touchscreen. If you need to send the same message to multiple recipients, you just need to click the 'To' word displayed above your message, so you won't need to go into other menus. Also, when you're in any of the phone's menus, pressing the Green key will bring up the dialer. Bear in mind that doing this while the Home screen is displayed will only bring up the Call log. A long press on the same Green button will activate the Voice command function. If you ask the phone 'What time is it?' it will respond by telling you the time. A long press on the middle button that opens up the Main menu will make the handset display the Task manager, which will show what applications you have opened. Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features all the quick access commands available on all Nokia handsets with keypads. Just bring up the dialer and try any code that you know it works with other Nokia devices and you'll be surprised to find that it works with 5800 XpressMusic also. In case I'll find more tips and tricks, there will be a third article that will explain them, but most likely you'll be reading a full review of the device by then. | Comment #3 by: Frisse on 02 May 2009, 19:23 GMT | reply to this comment | I just switched from the N95 to the 5800 and I'd have to say all the fiddling is a bit tricky, if not annoying, if your hands are larger than the hands of a child, but this is my first touch screen. I guess it's a getting-used-to-thing... |
| Comment #4 by: Tim on 05 May 2009, 09:41 GMT | reply to this comment | I've just moved from the N95 to the 5800 and the difference is massive. The main thing is battery life, which is more than double that of the N95. Connecting to the internet is prioritised to whatever order you like, for example mine will try two wi-fi connections first then mobile internet (I have it set this way for speed advantages). The only gripe I have it that while the GPS is really good and will pick up multiple satellites when I'm in my apartment, the only GPS programs are only; subscription based Nokia maps, Google Maps (which is slow and needs constant downloading) and semi functioning Garmin XT.
The touch function has taken a little time to get used to but work well and the voice command is amazing - no training needed, it just works.
In all the phone is brilliant and I couldn't be more pleased with it. |
| Comment #6 by: Not2Impressed on 13 May 2009, 22:31 GMT | reply to this comment | Not impressed with this phone either. Build Quality isn't great, camera picture quality isn't as expected and lots of other little annoying issues.
I know the Iphone is in a different league and costs more, however, having given the Nokia 5800 a chance, I'm afraid, I'm moving back to the legendary Iphone, nothing beats it :) |
| Comment #6.1 by: Cibariox on 02 Nov 2009, 19:04 GMT | i dont even understand why ppl keeps comparing every touchscreen phone to the iphone... nokia 5800 is NOT an iphone wanna be... actually they have very little in common (yes touch screen and touch flow?) its just tech... and using it doesnt mean that it is a clone... 5800 has its pros and cons while iphone can achieve superb graphic perfomance (do to hardware acceleration), and has its push notification technology ... nokia 5800 doesnt fall behind... while its true that the iphones interface is superb ... the 5800 takes the lead in img quality / battery life / music overall perfomance (read some reviews).... they are not even in the same category... so its not personal, but dude... its like comparing a mustang with a ferrari or some =/... they are both cars but it doesnt mean mustang is a ferrari wanna be wtf... |
| Comment #7 by: anne on 07 Jun 2009, 10:24 GMT | reply to this comment | just like to know how to stop the annoying voice saying the name of the caller when my phone rings? |
| Comment #7.1 by: Ben on 12 Jun 2009, 01:06 GMT | @anne: under profiles, edit your profile (general by default) in there you can turn "say callers name" off
Another tip is that if you put in a nickname for that person, it will read out the nickname, so when my wife rings my phone says "it's your lovely wife" |
| Comment #8 by: val on 01 Jul 2009, 20:39 GMT | reply to this comment | can anyone tell me how to transfer the phone book from nokia 5800 to bluetooth car kit, each time i try the bluetooth disconnects whe I give the commend to add contact... its very frustrasting!!! |

| Comment #9.1 by: SNIDE on 21 Aug 2009, 19:47 GMT | Hold the call key till it beeps at you and says "Speak now" on screen. :)
Love this phone! touch screen is very responsive unlike my previous Iphone and LG. The OS is easy and simple to use, the twist thing's a tad sensative but all in all excelent! |
| Comment #10 by: rfs on 14 Jul 2009, 04:10 GMT | reply to this comment | I want to have in my home screen (nokia 5800) a brief of my calendar under the web search.
In the past I had this alternative but now, I do not why, it doesn't show.
I think that must be a reconfiguration of the home screen themes,
which I don't know how to change.
Help will be appreciated. |
| Comment #11 by: dpr on 22 Jul 2009, 19:17 GMT | reply to this comment | you need to configure homescreen from the settings menu. your phone has got the default setting after it is reset. |

| Comment #14 by: Naomi on 26 Sep 2009, 10:07 GMT | reply to this comment | Hi there,
I got a 5800 yest and have put my old sim in it. I've got all my contacts numbers saved on both the phone and sim now but when someone calls me it only displays the number, not the contacts name. This is really annoying as I don't know who is ringing - is there an easy way to sort this out?
Thanks! |

| Comment #18 by: kappa on 09 Nov 2009, 15:55 GMT | reply to this comment | I bought one too... the gps is not actually as precise as it shoud be... the camera makes good pictures only if there is a lot of light, if you try to make a picture in a darker place, and by darker i mean inside your home for example, it will not have the expected quality. The touch screen can get scratches very easily. The handsfree included in the box is not as capable as it should be, meaning that if this is to be considered a music phone the head set has poor sound quality comparing to what sony ericsson offers for their phones (i am saying this beacause nokia is considered the top phone constructor in the word right?). The pen has a very odd shape and because of that it is a bit dificult to use. The software has a few bugs, not very annoying, but still... these being said, i must say that it is very easy to use. The interface is very user friendly.
So i will not be considered a person who looks only at the cons of a thing i must say this: If you want a good camera, buy a camera not a phone. If you want professional GPS, buy a professional GPS, not a phone. If you want the best musical quality, buy a more expensive mp3 player and some pro head sets. But, and here comes the important thing for this discution, if you want a great gadget that can do more than calling an sending text messages buy a NOKIA 5800. |
