More Hard Drive Options for the PlayStation 3?

- David Reeves is not clear

By: Andrei Dumitrescu, Games Editor

As the PlayStation Day Europe event wrapped up, interest in the gaming console from Sony has increased in the game media again, especially as David Reeves, the head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has stated that the PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in Europe in absolute numbers, by breaking the
5 million sales mark.

Now there's talk that the 40 GB version of the console is due for a make-over and that a new, improved version will make its way to retailers in the near future. But, talking to Eurogamer, Reeves pointed out to another possible development regarding the console: the addition of more storage space through additional hard drives.

He declared: "We launched with 60GB and to reduce the price we went to 40GB. We're not sure we want to stay with that configuration of hard drive, and I think what you're going to see in the future is maybe consumers can choose".

It's not clear whether Sony is ready to offer customized hard drives that can connect easily to the gaming console, but the head of SCEE really played up the fact that the customer can choose, saying "It might be that we will offer the possibility for people to have a bigger hard drive, but they have that option now. But it does not mean that we have anything in the works to introduce a different model or bigger hard drive built in." There's quite a bit of ambiguity in that statement.

At the moment, you can use external hard drives to augment the storage on the PS3. All you need is a USB cable and the external hard drive, preferably a big one with a substantial transfer speed. There's also the slightly more invasive option of replacing the hard drive in the console with a new one, using laptop specific models with SATA configurations. As of now, we can only speculate on whether a Sony proprietary solution is to be added to the above.
