A few days ago, people started talking about some new goodies in the mobile flavor of Gmail but nobody knew exactly which the improved features were. Today, Google decided to clarify the matter and posted a message on the Gmail blog in order to mention all the updated aspects of the mail technology. Joanne McKinley, Gmail mobile team, wrote that the new mobile Gmail is a lot faster than the previous versions of the service with even 80 percent faster for certain functions. But what's more important for us, the consumers, is that Gmail mobile now works on most Java ME compatible devices which is pretty important if we think that most handhelds have this ability.

The new Gmail comes with a contact viewer especially for the ones who have lots of saved contacts in their accounts. Using it, the consumers are able to view the details of certain people in a matter of seconds, just like on the traditional PC.

Moreover, if you own a handheld that comes with a full keyboard, you're now able to use key combinations in order to use the service quicker than anytime before. The shortcuts are also available for the PC version of Gmail, being all described here.

Here are all the improvements made by Google to the mobile version of Gmail as they were revealed by Joanne McKinley:

1. more than 30 percent faster overall, and 80 percent faster for some tasks 2. a contacts viewer to view your all Gmail contacts and addresses 3. an outgoing mail footer to let your recipients know you've sent an email from a mobile device 4. click-to-call phone numbers which you can call without retyping the number 5. emails are saved for later re-editing if connection drops or if you want to perform another task before sending out the message 6. Gmail keyboard shortcuts to perform tasks faster (on phones with full keyboards).
