Video game company Nintendo has announced that more video games using the Augmented Reality abilities of the newly launched Nintendo 3DS handheld will be released, developed both internally at the Japanese company and by third parties.
Speaking to the magazine, Nintendo Power Hideki Konno, who is cited as being the father of the
Nintendo 3DS, has said, “It seems that AR technology is going to become even more widely known and popular.”
He went on to add, “I think it’s going to be something that people will want to play around with, whether that’s on the developer side or consumer side. It’s already generating a ton of ideas within the Nintendo development teams, and we’ve been hearing ideas come from outside developers as well.”
The video game designer has not identified specific developers that might be interested in creating video games based on the Augmented Reality concept, which uses real world objects and settings and blends them in with in-game mechanics.
The main selling point of the Nintendo 3DS are its three-dimensional gaming capabilities, but the hardware creator has also talked a lot about its social feature and about the AR experiences it can deliver.
Some AR-powered video games are included in the retail Nintendo 3Ds package and gamers who have experienced them will probably be interested in picking up more in the future.
The 3DS has managed to perform very well on launch in all territories where it arrived, but there are some concerns about whether the device can sustain its sales figures in the long term.
The handheld is pretty impressive from a hardware point of view, but it has been hampered by a lack of blockbuster video game releases.
Nintendo has promised that important franchises will come to the new device in the coming months, starting with a three-dimensional version of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that is being prepared for a June release.
