A film is using additive manufacturing, The Zero Theorem

3D printing technology has reached the point where some truly high-detail objects can be fashioned in hours. Because of that, artists of all kinds have begun to use them.

Prop artists are among these people, and it seems that movies are already starting to make full use of 3D printed props.

Case in point, former Monty Python comedy group member Terry Gillian has begun to use this technology to prepare the props for his upcoming films, The Zero Theorem.

You see, Gilliam is also an animator, actor, director, and screenwriter, and while most of his filming style falls under the category of parody, that doesn't mean that acting and prop quality can afford to be half-baked.

Hence the man's decision to use additive manufacturing technology for his latest project. The main character in the film is a hacker, you see, one that moonlights as a philosopher.

North Design Labs, LLC are the ones actually doing the work though. The prop in the picture and the video is an alien controller (in reality a housing for a Samsung Galaxy tablet). FATHOM collaborated on the design.

The controller was made from PolyJet multi-materials by means of an Objet500 Connex 3D printer from Stratasys.
