2.5-inch flash-based storage units will ship in the first quarter of 2012

Anyone thinking the world could do with some more solid state drives need not fear, as Monster and SDJ Technologies are preparing the Le Mans Series.

This is reportedly a collection of 2.5-inch SSDs that, like so many others, relies on SandForce controllers for read and write speeds.

For those who want numbers, the reading is done at up to 550 MB/s and the writing at 515 MB/s.

Needless to say, the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface is implemented, since the SF-2200 controller chip wouldn't be able to let loose otherwise.

Le Mans use Toshiba synchronous MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash chips and have capacities of 80 GB, 120 GB, 240 GB and 400 GB.

They won't start shipping until CES 2012, though (Consumer Electronics Show, edition 2012), and their prices haven't been disclosed either.
