The driver of a monster truck going rogue in Mexico this weekend and killing eight people has been detained. Francisco Velazquez has been booked on manslaughter charges.

Police sources claimed that they could smell alcohol in Velazquez's breath. A witness described seeing him knocking his head on something inside the vehicle and seeing his helmet fly off.

At least one child was among the fatalities in the crash. Four people are still in critical condition, out of the 79 who have been injured.

According to Christian Post, Chihuahua state prosecutors' office spokesman, Carlos Gonzalez, mentioned that the gas pedal on the monster truck could have gotten stuck.

Feld Motor Sports spokesman Stephen Payne explains why a malfunction of the vehicle is probably not the cause of the accident.

"We have people on the floor who have remote ignition interrupters, so at the first sign of a problem with one of these trucks, we can shut it down immediately. And a truck is not allowed on the floor unless it passes a test that shows that interruption works," Payne says.
