Monomaxos, a Ubuntu based Linux distro, has been updated. The latest version Monomaxos 6.0 has been released bringing the same set of customizations and optimizations, that users have gotten used to, over to Ubuntu 11.04.

Monomaxos is a Greek project and is localized for the market, however, since it's based on Ubuntu anyone can use and enjoy it.

Monomaxos 6.0 comes with many of the usual enhancements this type of customized distros usually included, things like multimedia codecs out of the box and proprietary video drivers.

"This is the sixth edition of MONOMAXOS Linux Operating System localized for the Greek language that comes out as a Live DVD," Monomaxos announced on its homepage.

"Supports playback of every kind of multimedia material (including HD video) and any kind of internet content out of the box and and can also be used for setting up a standalone Media Center (including XBMC Media Center)," it explained.

Monomaxos comes with everything you'd expect from Ubuntu 11.04, though the Unity desktop environment has been replaced with a more traditional, in a way, Gnome + Avant Window Navigator combination.

A localized version of LibreOffice 3.3 is included, fully translated into Greek and with a Greek spell-check. English is also an option, of course.

"A large variety of Open source software installed in this Live DVD provides solutions for all needs of the modern user and makes a powerful operating system for use in Desktop or Laptop PCs," the announcement read.

The Monomaxos LiveDVD, which weighs in at 1.6 GB, contains a local repository with several packages that may come in handy. The selection is based on what Monomax users most often installed themselves, on their own.

The packages are not included by default in Monomaxos, but can be easily installed even without an internet connection. Among the packages are also the latest versions of ATI and NVIDIA graphic card drivers.
