Cities: Skylines developer Colossal Order emphasizes the importance of mods to the actual game, and pledges to keep implementing some of the most popular ones into the game so that users who don't bother to install them can still get their benefits.

Cities: Skylines launched last month and quick went on to become a smash hit for developer Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Entertainment. Thanks to word of mouth and the embrace of the modding culture on the Steam service, the game is quite popular right now and shows no sign of stopping.

Mods are essential to Skylines, dev believes

According to Colossal Order CEO Mariina Hallikainen, who talked with Polygon about the game's success, one of the most important factors was the fact that the studio embraced the modding culture and built great tools so that fans, both experienced and newcomers, could build all sorts of things for Skylines.

Hallikainen says that the studio's previous title, Cities in Motion, was quickly cracked by modders, who then started to create new elements and options for the title. As such, with Cities: Skylines, the studio built such tools straight from the get-go, and the results are testimony that this approach works quite well.

"It was important to the fans and it's important to us to bring options to the players. Because I don't think the mods take anything away from us. It just enriches the game and the players. Now [that] we know that so many people have bought our game, we know we have to make it even better for them," she explains.

In the near future, the studio plans on implementing popular mods into the actual game so that players who don't bother to install them can still get benefits, such as new options, features, mechanics, and more.

Until then, fans should expect more updates as well as fresh content for Cities: Skylines.
