When taking into account the United States, Japanese and United Kingdom markets Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision Blizzard, is the best sold videogame of 2009, with close to 12 million copies moved to gamers since it was released in November.

The performance of the first person shooter is impressive especially when taking into account the fact that second place went to Wii Sports Resort for the Nintendo Wii, which has managed to sell just 7.57 million units since it was launched in July 2009.

Nintendo succeeded in snapping up all the other places in the top five, which was compiled using data from the NPD Group in the United States, GfK Chart Track in the United Kingdom and Enterbrain in Japan. Third spot went to New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii with 7.41 million copies sold, fourth place was occupied by Wii Fit Plus with 5.80 million, while the top five was closed down by the original Wii Fit, with 5.44 million units sold in one year.

The presence of Wii Fit in the top can be explained by the fact that it is often bundled with the Balance Board accessory but the domination of the Nintendo made titles for the Wii seems to be a reality that cannot easily be accounted for by just pointing to the hardware bundles used. The Nintendo Wii might be packed with Wii Sports but the success of its sequel cannot only be attributed to the bundling with the Motion Plus add on.

Nintendo has the biggest install base of the current generation console and is dominating sales on its own platform, which puts it in a position that both Sony and Microsoft must be envious of. The Japanese console manufacturer and videogame developer has been very successful in reshaping the profile of the person interested in gaming and is now reaping the rewards of that effort.
