IW's response was prompt, and the hack should be fixed by now

Even with the "almost perfectly" controlled environment set up by Infinity Ward and its IWNet, the one thing that Modern Warfare 2 isn't is under control. The game has already seen a large number of bugs, glitches and exploits. Even leaving the Akimbo problem aside, the day-one PC cheats as well as the Javelin glitch, the one that was bad enough to get people banned, brought some serious problems to the game servers. Now, it looks like another problem has crept up on the game's multiplayer.

While it seems to be a discussion going on about just what exactly this is, a cheat, exploit or hack, according to IW's Robert Bowling, "ice skating" would indeed be a hack. While gamers care a little bit less about what it's called and more about the end result, the bottom line is that MW2 has once again fumbled. The good news would be that, this time around, this should be a very quickly solved miss, one all stitched up and fixed by now.

The problem was picked up by Infinity Ward over the weekend, and it promised that it would go away by today, with no actual patch being necessary. While preferring to remain anonymous, the Infinity Ward source told Kotaku that, "[The issues] don't die out immediately, but should be nearly [gone] 100 percent by this point." While there have been heated discussions over the net among fans over this matter, so far it has only been spotted on the Xbox 360.

Later on, an official word came from Bowling confirming both the nature of the problem, as well as "the cure for the itch." He Tweeted that, "Playlist update to prevent the spread of the 'ice skating' / speed hack. Will prevent matchmaking into modded games." An hour later, he explained that, "These aren't bugs in game code but game files being changed by users on modded kits." If this is the case, then the lack of dedicated servers is once again proven redundant.
