Activision Blizzard has announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has sold more than 1 billion dollars worth of games since it was released at the beginning of November 2009. The number is taken from internal Activision estimates and has not been independently confirmed.

The biggest share of that figure was achieved in its first five days on the shelves, when the game brought in 550 million dollars. Activision is saying that the performance of the Infinity Ward created videogame rivals that of movies like The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and even James Cameron's Avatar.

Robert “Bobby” Kotick, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Activision Blizzard, stated that “Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records. There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

It will be interesting to note the performance of Modern Warfare 2 as the NPD Group figures for December are released tomorrow. Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, stated that he expected New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii to actually sell better than the leading platform version of MW2. Modern Warfare 2 is set to receive a map pack exclusive to the Xbox 360 home gaming console at some point during spring and Activision is getting ready to announce the setting and other details related to the new Call of Duty game that developer Treyarch is putting together and which is rumored to be going to Vietnam. There are also some rumors saying that Infinity Ward is not working on Modern Warfare 3 and is currently pursuing a new intellectual property.
