Modbook Upgrades Now Available

The folks at Other World Computing (OWC) are now offering additional components to go with their Modbooks. Upgrades include memory modules, hard drives, and optical SuperDrives. Component upgrades cost between $75 and $190. The Modbook is touted as “the fastest state tablet computer on the planet,” and won a Best of Show award at Macworld 2007.

OWC is the first to offer MacBook owners a way to turn their Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook into a ModBook. Axiotron Modservice can transform your White MacBook (for example) into a working Mac tablet, using aircraft quality aluminum and state-of-the-art “Pen Input” technology. Mod-ready units are also available for purchase.

The Axiotron Modbook is built using the unique digitizer technology from Wacom, an industry leader in graphics tablet technology for professional artists and consumers. According to Axiotron, the included Axiotron Digitizer Pen is fast (133 position updates per second), accurate (20x display resolution), sensitive (512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity), and efficient (no batteries required).

Axiotron Modbook starts at just $1,299. Customers can ship their own white or black Core 2 Duo 13.3-inch MacBook to be converted into a Modbook for that price. You can grab an already modded unit for almost double the price ($2,199). Pre-built tablets also include a 2.1 GHz model with 1GB of RAM, 120GB HDD and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive for $2,250, or a 2.4 GHz model with 2GB of RAM, 160GB HDD and a Dual-Layer SuperDrive for $2,480.

You can choose to beef up your Modbooks with 6GB of RAM and single or dual hard-drive configurations. For example, a Modbook can offer 750GB of storage capacity, should you opt for a 500GB HDD (in the primary drive bay) and a 250GB HDD in the secondary bay. You can also forgo the two-drive option and instead add a SuperDrive that features 8x DVD-R burn speeds and support for Dual-Layer discs.

OWC offers a three-year extended warranty that covers the original MacBook components, additional upgrades installed by OWC, as well as the original tablet components. Upon placing your order request, an Axiotron Authorized Service Provider will contact you with instructions on where to send your MacBook for conversion.
