Last week we reported that folks at iPhone Hellas had blown the whistle on the release date for iPhone OS 2.2. The news attracted both positive and negative feedback from readers. Some of our commenters expressed their lack of hope for MMS making its way onto the iPhone, with the arrival of the iPhone 2.2 software. Therefore, we did some digging up, and what we found was that Mobispine is on track to offer up MMS for you guys, under the form of an app, downloadable via the iTunes App Store.

Softpedia reader Funky Frank proposed: “Lets get back to basics here, proper text message functions, like forward, and MMS. Less Safari crashes this time would be nice, Better capabilities of the Bluetooth adapter.” The guy couldn't be more right, according to reader Sting, who believed that “Basic Fwd functions would be nice, as well as MMS. I like the video ideas as well, instead of just pictures,” he wrote.

Mobispine claims it wants to offer a white-label MMS app for iPhone operators all over the world. The app that would be loaded on iPhones integrates with the address book, camera and photo browser, adding a “send by MMS option” to each, according to the company's official announcement.

“Mobispine continues its strong track record of innovation, and is proud to unveil the first true MMS service for iPhones. We are confident that global operators will find Mobispine’s MMS service for iPhone easy-to-use and profitable,” said Dusyant Patel, CEO, Mobispine. “This new offering will help operators generate revenue, and differentiate their offerings in a highly competitive market.”

We're not so sure how confident Mobispine is about Apple finding its service appealing. The fact that Apple has to give its approval for the app is very concerning, given its track record of rejecting software that might conflict with its own. Slash Gear points out that Apple may very well be working on its own MMS solution, having left its users out in the cold for so long.

Mobispine's blog doesn't reveal whether the company is awaiting approval from Apple, or whether they've even submitted it. In any case, the minute we learn of its presence on the venue, we'll let you know. So, who's been missing MMS on their iPhone, and who hasn't?

that would be so cool but you just know that apple won't allow it.

Just to be able to forward SMS would be heaven in itself. I don't want to jailbreak my phone, so a native application in the App Store would be fantastic.

Having the ability to send and receive pictures via an MMS service from Apple or via an App would be outstanding! The thought of having to email a picture from my iPhone to someone or having to mess around with setting up my contacts phone numers and adding the wireless providers URL for MMS is a pain and is quite cumbersome as you must know what provider they are with and so on. Then it comes down to actually receiving a picture, sound clip or movie to your iPhone without having the standard MMS capability on the iPhone. If you've used AT&T's viewmymessage.com site, I'm sure you when what I mean when I state the obvious here that it's a lousy service and that they need to restructure the entire system.

I am in hopes that this MMS App is approved but I will certainly not hold my breath waiting for it to be approved by Apple or even accepted by the wireless service providers.
