Developed by Shape Services, Mobiola Headset application turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a wireless headset that you can use with your Desktop or laptop PC. Being on the go most of the time constrains people to use certain gadgets and devices with the sole purpose of not encumbering themselves with heavy luggage.

Even though it contributes with just a little to the “travel lightly” philosophy, Mobiola Headset frees its users of the burden of carrying a wired PC headset while traveling. Either it's a PC or MAC that you're using, Mobiola Headset will work like a wireless headset and lets you talk through VoIP services such as, Skype, MSN, Yahoo!, AOL IM and many more.

Another important feature of the application is the recording capability. Basically, you will be able to record conversations and save them in .wav files on your PC. Further, you can also listen to the music you have stored on your desktop PC through streaming or listen the conversations you recorded.

I have tested the application using an iPhone 3G and everything worked smooth and flawless. Before installing the application on your mobile device, be sure you have a working Wi-Fi connection and that you have downloaded and installed the desktop version of Mobiola Headset.

After the installation of the desktop version is finished, you can start downloading the mobile version on your phone. Install it and start the application on your desktop PC. Then connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network and start Mobiola Headset app.

You will notice that your PC has detected a connection and will ask you to allow your phone to connect. Just accept and you are set to use your mobile device as a wireless headset.

The application works flawlessly with Skype, and the sound quality during conversations was pretty good. The first time you open Skype after you have installed Mobiola Headset, it will ask you if you want to use Mobiola's audio device. Click “Yes” and you will be able to talk and hear during VoIP calls. You can even talk from another room, away from your computer.

Also, in case you want to record a VoIP call you just need to press the red button displayed on either the desktop or mobile version of the application. All files are saved in .wav format in “MyDocuments / Mobiola Audio Files” folder.

Another interesting feature of the application is the streaming capability. Basically, you will be able to listen to the music on your PC directly on the mobile device. I have used Winamp application on my desktop PC to play the music, but I needed to make some adjustments.

Go to the program's Preferences and click on the Output option. Select the second plug-in Nullsoft DirectSound Output and click Configure. You will need to choose Mobiola Wave option, so you can hear anything on your phone. Stop the playback after you made the changes and start it again.

Don't worry if the music sound is crappy, as you will need to make one more adjustment. This time open the Settings menu of your mobile version of Mobiola Headset and instead of Voice, click on the Music option. The application uses another compression algorithm when it is set on Music mode.

As long as your Wi-Fi connection is good, you can go as far as you want and still be able to listen to the music. One thing I noticed is that the sound is pretty low, but if you have one of those docking stations with stereo speakers, your iPhone will sound excellent.

Mobiola Headset can also be used while gaming, if you're playing while using a TV instead of your PC monitor. As long as you insert other headphones with mic into the phone, you will have no problems speaking with your friends in-game and still be able to hear the game's sounds. It would be interesting to adapt the application to other Wi-Fi capable devices like Sony Playstation 3.
All in all, Mobiola Headset distinguishes through its flexibility and versatility capabilities, as it can be used with many other programs besides VoIP services applications.

Mobiola Headset is compatible with Mac OS X or Windows 7, Vista, XP and requires WiFi connection to connect Mobiola Headset application to desktop. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch 2nd Generation and iPad. Using Mobiola Headset on iPod Touch 2nd Gen and iPad requires external earbuds with a built-in microphone. If you're using an iPod Touch 1st Generation bear in mind that Mobiola Headset is not supported.

Mobiola Headset is available for iOS 3.0 or later, Symbian S60 3rd Edition, and Windows Mobile 5 or 6 for Smartphone and Pocket PC.
