Mobilkom Austria, mobile subsidiary of the Telekom Austria Group, announced that it has started a DVB-H pilot project jointly with Austrian Broadcasting Corporation ORF, Hutchinson 3G, Siemens ?sterreich, ORS (Austria Radio Broadcaster), the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg and with support from the Austrian Regulatory Authority, Redfunk und Telekom Regulierungs.

The pilot project started on the 1st of September last year and will carry on until June this year. One thousand pilot participants are currently testing the DVB-H technology on mobile, which is introduced for the first time in Austria.

The standard technology allows the viewing of sharp and stable pictures, high transmission quality as well as a long battery life, all very important factors in providing a successful TV service.

There are several other advantages including higher capacity that allows the simultaneous deployment by multi-users. The pilot is based on the cooperation of several partners from different industries, out of which two mobile operators and a broadcaster. Each of the companies has a lot of experience and specific expertise that they can contribute for the project. Alfred Grinschgl, Managing Director of RTR-GmbH said: "mobile tv austria is a good example for the consistent implementation of Austria's digitalization strategy. The rapid introduction of mobile TV contributes to leveraging the potential of digital terrestrial TV for the benefit of Austria as a business and media location." RTR is responsible for providing expert support and is also investing 1.3 million Euros in the project.

The user will have access to TV programs that were optimized for mobile phones via the 'mobile TV Austria' platform. For the time being, the network only covers central parts of Vienna.
