Out of all hybrid devices, this is among the strangest

We've seen plenty of devices with mixed purposes before, but some of them have really stretched the definition of the word hybrid, since they have actually combined assets that have little to do with each other.

Kingston's wireless MobileLite Wireless is a new example of such a non-hybrid: it plays the roles of card reader and portable charger.

In a way, it is a multi-faceted successor, of sorts, to the Wi-Drive, a wireless and portable solid-state drive.

Instead of integrated NAND storage though, it has an SD card slot, as well as a USB 2.0 port for when there is no Wi-Fi connection nearby.

A microSD adapter ships with the item, to make sure compatibility with memory cards is as wide as possible.

Most important, however, is the possibility of accessing everything stored on the drive just by typing the MobileLite's IP address into a browser.

"When we released Wi-Drive, our customers loved the idea of storing and sharing content from a wireless device but wanted additional slots to plug in everyday items like USBs and cards. We listened to them through the entire process," said Craig Tilmont, wireless products business manager, Kingston.

"MobileLite Wireless is really easy to use but just in case, we created videos and even a simple walkthrough tutorial when people first access the app. One thing people often forget is that Kingston offers free technical support. We are here to help people set it up if needed. I think once people give this product a try, they will recommend it to their friends."

The portable battery has enough energy to recharge a phone, but likely won't fully refuel a tablet. It should still be enough for emergencies though.

Currently, only Apple iOS systems and gadgets can use the MobileLite Wireless fully, but there should soon be an Android App too. The price is of $70 / €53-70.
