Although people don't necessarily see mobile phones as being very similar to PCs, technology has brought these devices to this great evolution level. Along with great performances also come great threats from malware applications, just as in the case of computers.

The industry of mobile phone anti-maleware should see a development at the same extent as that of handsets. The more evolved cellulars we have, the more solutions for protecting them users will need. The World Mobile Anti-Malware Products Markets is expected to earn revenues of over 60 million in 2007 and reach an estimated USD 2,000 million in 2014.

"Mobile phones are becoming ever more sophisticated; smartphone usage is rising, while advanced capabilities such as MMS, Bluetooth and Internet access are increasingly becoming standard features in phones", states Frost & Sullivan Industry Analyst Katie Gotzen. "However, few people realise that it is these extra capabilities that make mobile malware attacks possible".

"Even though awareness is slightly higher in the enterprise space, mobile malware is not a top-of-mind issue", further says Gotzen. "These perceptions have led to a low level of demand for mobile anti-malware products, and have consequently dampened vendor revenues", he also added.

The number of attacks targeted towards mobile phones is still a low one, especially due to the fact that few people have seen the great potential of these devices. Low threat levels match the low levels of risk awareness that corporate and consumer segments prove. In time, as the threat levels will increase, so will people's interest in best protecting their handsets from the malware threat.

Mobile threats have been increasing exponentially over the last few years. Five times as many security events were reported by mobile operators in 2006 than in 2005. The World Mobile Anti-Malware Products Market is part of the Network Security Subscription.
