The Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) organization, an international consortium consisting of over 70 of the major Linux users, has announced the formation of the Mobile Linux Initiative (MLI) group, which will encourage and accelerate the adoption of Linux on the mobile market.
PalmSource is one of the founding members of the Mobile
Linux Initiative and the company announced last year that it wants to build its own framework that runs on Linux.
Although we don't think it requires a confirmation, we will mention from an official source that the cellular telephony market is blossoming. The official source, the analysis company Ovum, announces that the global sales in this field have increased by 31% last year, and by 2009, it is estimated that 2.8 billion cell phones will be functional.
The handset producers are starting to choose Linux, trying to minimize production costs, but also to ensure increased performances through higher running speeds, flexibility and improved security.
The members of the MLI group will develop Linux applications aimed at handsets, complying at the same time with ODSL's internal standards and projects.
