Some people will probably want it for personal use though, given its size

There are many keyboard running about the market, but iKey decided to make one that isn't supposed to mingle with the rest. It gave it the name SLK-880-FSR-USB-H.

The distinct lack of a short, casual brand name is the first clue that iKey's invention is not an average, run off the mill consumer product.

The size is the second hint: it measures 6.84 x 11.45 x 1.15 inches (174 x 290 x 29 mm, give or take).

What really makes this thing a specialized item is the rugged build though: it meets MIL-STD-461 specifications and exceeds NEMA 4x requirements.

In layman terms that means that it can be dropped form 2.0 meters without any problems and the USB cable can cope with a strain of 25 pounds (11.33 kilograms).

Furthermore, it is shockproof, vibration resistant and waterproof, making it a good choice for use in air, land or sea vehicles.

For those who want details, iKey chose a silicone rubber keypad and a 10-number pad, plus integrated mounting holes with stainless steel inserts.

Other features include LED backlighting (with two brightness control keys), an integrated Black Out key (all LEDs are closed instantly), and an USB 2.0 hub.

"Built to perform through shock, vibration and humidity, the SLK-880-FSR-USB-H comes in a conductive plastic case designed for enhanced electro magnetic interference (EMI) performance," said Jim Mayo, controller at iKey.

"The durability and features packed into this compact design provide our clients with a top performing, keyboard like no other."

The USB 2.0 keyboard should be good for all sorts of tasks, especially in situations where there isn't much space to go around.

Finally, the inclusion of an USB hub allows it to connect flash drives and other things to the computer or whatever other device the peripheral is paired with.

A demo of the newcomer will be held at DefExpo 2012, March 29th - April 1st in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, India. No price available yet.
